The #1 Reason Why Project Managers Fail: TOO SOFT!
Examples of behaviors to adopt to avoid being an ineffective, too-soft, project manager:

Provide timely, constructive criticism to project members
Escalate to higher levels of management — within two work days — project-related problems that are at an apparent impasse for resolution
Passionately defend the right project plan to the project sponsor, to executives, and to the client(s)
Behave as if you have the authority to match your responsibility
Drive good project management practices throughout the project
Ask for help when needed
Hold project members accountable for their commitments and actions
Constructively work issues to closure; don't complain — ever!
Assign tasks to the appropriate project members instead of taking on those monkeys for yourself; if necessary, provide appropriate help
Routinely seek out and obtain needed project management training of both hard and soft skills
Take timely positions on issues
Make decisions as they are needed; don't delay or abstain
Focus daily on the top 3 project problems and their corresponding solutions
